I wanted to something for my Birthday, so I’m going to give away a copy of my favorite contemporary romance of 2012.
It’s by brand new self-published author Kim DeSalvo. Her book Incidental Happenstance is one of the best “author’s first book” I have ever read. Click the rafflecopter link at the bottom of post for Give Away. The winner will be announced on Jan. 28th.
What inspired you write Incidental Happenstance?
I’ve been a writer all my life–journals, poetry, short stories, kid’s books…but aside from a poem published in a giant anthology, I never really tried publishing them. Incidental Happenstance started as an idea that got stuck in my head. It invaded my sleep and started growing; the characters began having conversations, developing faces and voices, and they just wouldn’t leave me alone. Life was incredibly busy, as it always is, but it got to the point where I had to get it out and I started writing. At first I thought it would be like the others, sitting in my huge file of writing “stuff,” but I liked how it was coming along, and started sharing it with a few people who encouraged me to keep working on it. It was them who inspired me to take it all the way to publication–my book club, family, and friends who read early drafts and made suggestions that I took to heart when doing the never ending edits and revisions that pretty much took over my life. I’m so glad I did!
Why write a contemporary romance?
In this instance, I just went with the story. Romance is such a huge part of life, and falling into someone else’s love story is a fun way to escape from the trials and tribulations of everyday life; whether reading or writing.
I loved the scene with Chester and Francine! How did you come up with it?
I wish I knew! Sometimes I just get lost in the story and wonder myself where the words came from
Is there going to be another book and will it (hopefully) continue with Tia and Dylan? The sequel is in the works. I’ve been so humbled and awed that people have loved Tia and Dylan as I came to love them, and have been thrilled by the requests for more of their story. I had more in store for them from the onset, but had to find an ending point for the book to keep it a reasonable length. I’m so happy to be able to stay in their world for while longer! I’ve also got some new ideas simmering on the back burner.
Will we ever get the stories behind the other band members? Bo is going to be a pretty prominent figure in the sequel–he and Lexi have much more to explore in their relationship…
Do you have playlist to give us an idea of how INHAP sounds?
Listen to anything by Dave Matthews. He was absolutely the voice I had in my head when I envisioned Dylan on stage. Raw and honest, pure and gravelly; like honey and sandpaper.
Just for fun…I love to travel. I don’t have kids, and my day job as a teacher affords me a good amount of time off. Every single place I visit changes me and reminds me that no matter what our differences, we are all the same at the core. I’m also a scuba diver, and love being an alien in the underwater world.
Blue. Because it’s the color of a warm summer sky, but is also a melancholy color. It encompasses every emotion.
Hmmm. I guess it depends on the day. And time of day. In the summer, a tall glass of fresh lemonade. Coffee in the mornings. I also like micro brew beers. But my go-to cocktail is a Long Island Iced Tea.
Favorite snack food? Fresh guacamole–nature’s perfect food!
Last movie you went to the theater to see? The Hobbit. Tolkien was a genius, and I’m a sucker for the films. Have extended editions of all the Lord of the Rings movies, and can practically recite the dialogue.
Last and/or favorite book read? The last book was the final installment in Nora Roberts’s Bride Quartet series. That woman really knows how to write a romance! My favorite book of all time, though, is The Stand by Stephen King. It’s one of only a handful of books that I’ve read more than once…the man is an absolute master when it comes to the art of writing.
