SETH
Cyborgs: More Than Machines, #5

His mission: Blend in with the humans. Save the cyborgs. And seduce the only woman he ever loved, without getting killed.

Cybernetic spy models are different from other humans turned machine. For one thing, they never completely lost touch with their humanity, or their memories. But retaining their identity doesn’t mean the military didn’t mess with their lives. Seth lost the woman he loved because of their web of lies. When the chance arises to make things right, he relies on his superior intellect—and irresistible charm—to prove his innocence, and make Anastasia his again.

Anastasia might possess upgraded parts and programming, but the scientists never could cure her of her biggest weakness, jealousy. The volatile emotion made her walk away from love once. Can she overcome it and recognize the truth? Or will she continue to let the military manipulate her emotional strings?

EXCERPT:

There was no warning. No sound to betray their presence. No smell. Nothing. Just the sudden cold touch of a pistol muzzle nudging the back of his head.

He froze.

Silence reigned except for the chirp of the little creatures that lived in the woods and emitted bird-like noises. They sounded cute until you came across them. Unlike a feathered denizen of earth, the furry buggers who chirped like songbirds resembled more a rat with spiked fur, razor-sharp teeth, and a really bad attitude if they felt threatened. Ankles beware!

They’re not the only ones who get nasty when their lives are in danger.

Although none of his muscles moved, Seth held himself ready to act, letting his internal processor analyze the space around him, seeking a hint, anything to give him an edge. He inhaled deep, testing the air, in an attempt to see if he could identify his attacker. Lo and behold, he got a faint trace.

Of all the things he expected to smell out here in the forest, vanilla soap wasn’t one of them. The clean fresh scent was familiar, as was the position he found himself in. Strange as it seemed, he’d lived the almost exact scenario once, a long time ago. But he’d thought that person dead. Or at least lost to him. It can’t be. Not after all this time. Was it possible?

No time like the present to test his theory.

“Well hello there, gorgeous. I knew you couldn’t resist me forever.” He couldn’t help but grin when his guess was confirmed by a husky voice that still had the ability to send shivers down his spine.

“I see you’re still just as annoying.

Whirling lightning quick, Seth played the part of surrendering victim and held his hands above his head so the gun pointed at his forehead. Face to face, he couldn’t help but drink in the reality of the lady who haunted his dreams. His ex-partner. The only woman he’d ever loved. The only one who ever spurned him. The woman he’d once called wife.

A wife who wore a scowl and didn’t shower him with welcoming kisses.

He couldn’t resist goading her. “Me, annoying? Never. Handsome and dashing, yes. I might even use the term rakish.”

“And cocky. You do realize I’m holding a loaded gun to your head. Do you really want to tempt me into pulling the trigger?”

If she’d wanted him dead, his brains would already decorate the bushes around them. Anastasia knew hundreds of ways to kill a man. However, he’d wager she wouldn’t have returned just to put a bullet in his head. She’d torture him first. Probably painfully. How he’d missed her.

“You won’t kill me,” he stated with utter confidence.

“Don’t be so sure. I’ve pictured your death a thousand times. My favorite was the one where I push you off that cliff we once climbed in the Himalayan Mountains and watch you fall, knowing that you’ll actually have time to reflect on what a jerk you are before you hit the ground.”

Okay, so this wasn’t exactly the reunion he’d once hoped for. Someone still had anger issues. Question was, did she mean it when she said she wished him dead? Only one way to find out.

“Well, if you’ve returned to kill me, would you mind getting on with it? I’ve got places to go, people to see.”

“You mean irritate.” The muzzle of her gun dropped, and she rolled her expressive blue eyes.

“And here I thought you enjoyed my quirky nature and sense of humor.”

“I blame my previously defective, human brain for that momentary lapse of reasoning.”

He couldn’t help but laugh. “Oh how I’ve missed your acerbic tongue. My dearest Anastasia, love of my life, I am delighted you’ve returned to brighten my existence. Did you miss me?”

She snorted. “Like a dog misses his fleas.”

AUTHOR BIO:

EveLanglais_picHello, my name is Eve. I’m a stay at home mom who writes full time in between juggling my three kids, hubby, and housework, I write really raunchy stuff–usually with werewolves lol.

I am a bestselling Amazon author, ranking often in their top 100 romance authors. But I’m not just popular with Kindle readers. I was one of the top ten selling authors on AllRomance for 2013 and have had numerous of my books hit the top 100 books over all on Barnes & Nobles as well.

I’m writing romance, my way. I do have a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. I like strong alpha males, naked chests and werewolves. Lots of werewolves. In fact, you’ll notice most of my multi partner stories revolve around great, big, overprotective Lycans who just want to please their woman. I am also extremely partial to aliens, you know the kind who abduct their woman and then drive them insane…with pleasure of course.

I love to write, and while I don’t always know what my mind is going to come up with next, I can promise it will be fun, probably humorous and most of all romantic, because I love a happily ever after.

 ~*~

EXCERPT from Fire-Alarm Masquerade by Stacey Kennedy:

On her tulip-lined pathway, Abby Hill stood, unable to move, barely able to breathe. She stared in horror as harsh smoke drifted through the air and fire licked out of the bedroom window of her Federal-style row house.

Firefighters passed by in a blur, portraying a sense of calm in the chaos. Though she’d heard things like possible electrical fire discussed among the men, the voices around her were distant. She wrapped her arms around herself, tears dampening her cheeks.

“Miss, you need to back up,” a low, smooth voice said.

“This can’t be happening,” Abby managed through her tight throat.

Firm hands gripped her arms and turned her to face warm green eyes with hints of brown around the irises. The firefighter, decked out in full work uniform with a 4 on his black hat, had dark soot on the right side of his squared jaw. His brows drew together with his frown. “Is this your house?”

Abby never thought of herself as a person who showed emotions to a stranger. Now, she could hide nothing. “Oh, God . . .” Hot sickness rolled through her and the world got dizzy, real fast.

His grip on her arms tightened. “I’m taking that as a yes.”

Before she could drop to the cement below, she found those firm hands belonged to strong arms as the fireman tugged her into his powerful body. He lowered her to the ground, settling her between his legs.

Abby pressed her head against his rough coat, which smelled richer with smoke than what lingered in the air. She held on tight to the coarse material, unable to let go.

Quick minutes passed, and soon the wooziness faded. All but sitting in his lap, she noticed the smoke wasn’t nearly as thick. When her spun around thoughts centered, that’s when she realized something didn’t make sense. “Why is my bedroom window broken?”

The firefighter’s thick thighs pressed against her, as did his arms. “We needed to break the window to evacuate the heat and smoke before we put out the fire.”

Somehow, being in his arms made facing what happened easier, or maybe the shock had worn off and she could process better. She noticed that no other windows were broken in her house. “Was the fire only in my bedroom?”

“Yes, you got lucky.” He shifted on his knees, yet didn’t move away. “The fire was contained to the master bedroom.”

She gulped. “Lucky?”

He hesitated, and all the pressure around her faded before he squeezed his arms. “I’m afraid you can’t enter your house until the chief gives you the all clear. Do you have someone you can stay with?”

She gripped his coat, resting her head against his arm, tears trailing over her hot face. Though she noticed the firefighters coming in and out of house, and heard the loud conversations going on around her, she didn’t care she sobbed in front of strangers. “It’s gone.”

He leaned away and his gentle eyes held hers. “Abby Hill? Is that what I heard the police say?” She nodded and he waited for the car with the loud muffler to pass before he added, “What you have is a partial loss, Abby. Yes, your bedroom is gone. The rest of your upstairs might have smoke and water damage, but your insurance will cover it.”

She understood why he looked to her as if she was overreacting. In the scheme of things, this didn’t seem all that bad. “I don’t care about the rest of the house.” Her voice cracked. “The photos of my family were in my bedroom.” Ten years ago, a car accident had stolen away her parents, younger brother, and older sister. “It’s all I had of them. There’s nothing left.”

He rubbed her back, giving an understanding nod. “I’m sorry.”

Somehow, his response was better than, “At least you weren’t hurt, or it could’ve been worse.” Though there were positives in her current hell, it didn’t change the fact that every picture she had of her family was likely destroyed. Nothing else remained that proved they’d ever existed, except for their gravestones.

A moment passed as his eyes searched hers. “You have no other family that would have some photos?”  “Both my parents didn’t have siblings. There are a few friends of the family . . .” Her chest ached. “Possibly they have some, but it’s not . . .”

“Not the special pictures of you and your family,” he offered.

Her chin quivered. “Exactly.”

His lips pinched with his regard of her. The firefighter excelled at serving the public, she actually believed he felt bad for her. While she knew she should let him go, being a complete stranger and all, she couldn’t find it in herself to tear herself away.

Staring into his piercing eyes, she had the oddest sense that he didn’t want her to either. Something so sweet and pure passed in the air between them. A sensation of understanding that at this moment she needed more than anything. And how did that make any sense?

Why was being in a stranger’s arms providing her with such warmth and familiarity, and more than anything making her feel this safe?

“Where is she?” a familiar feminine voice snapped. “And if you dare tell me again that I can’t see Abby, I’ll remove your manly bits, you giant ass!”

Abby glanced over her shoulder, catching sight of Sierra, dressed in her typical black skirt and red blouse. Abby didn’t know how Sierra found out about the fire, but she didn’t care; she needed her best friend.

Sierra’s blue eyes were narrowed and her bright red lipstick covered her frown as she gave the firefighter a glare promising a painful death. After a good stare down, the man gestured in Abby’s direction, then Sierra rushed forward. She yanked Abby into her arms. “Jesus, sweetie. Can you believe they wouldn’t let me through to see you?”

“It’s all gone.” Abby rested her head against Sierra’s shoulder, hugging her tight. “They’re gone.”

Sierra paused, then heaved a sigh. “Shit, this is awful. I’m so sorry, Abby.”

Of course, Sierra understood the depth of Abby’s despair. Sierra had been there the night they worked on their high-school assignment together. That fateful night Abby didn’t go for her brother’s special dinner to celebrate his touchdown at the football game, and the night where the car carrying her entire family collided with the transport truck.

Leaning away from Sierra, Abby looked into her best friend’s teary eyes. “That’s all I had of them.”

Sierra gathered Abby’s hands. “You don’t have any pictures in your attic or storage?”

Abby shook her head. “I kept everything in my bedroom in a memory box. I wanted to scan them all, keep them safe, but—”

“Don’t do that to yourself,” Sierra interjected with a soft voice. “You’re not to blame for this. It’s a horrible accident.”

Abby remembered hearing something similar from her therapist. Not that she thought she could’ve prevented the car accident that killed her family, but her guilt for not being with them that night had stayed with her for a long time.

With her therapist’s voice in her head reminding her she couldn’t stay in the past and mourn things she couldn’t change, she pushed off the cement pathway. She glanced around, seeing that the entire neighborhood was watching from the other side of the street, and she didn’t want to process the loss of photos under the scrutiny of onlookers.

Sierra must’ve read Abby’s thoughts, since she reached up and fixed Abby’s hair. There wasn’t a day that Sierra had let Abby walk out the door with a strand of hair out of place. She ran her fingers under Abby’s eyes, clearing away her mascara. “Let’s get out of here.” She gave a small smile, wiggling  her eyebrows. “Unless you’d rather stay in the arms of that sexy firefighter.”

Abby blinked. “Who’s sexy?”

Sierra snorted. “Seriously?” She grasped Abby’s shoulders. “When I found you, you were in the arms of that.”

Abby spun to face the house and she discovered a man whom she suspected was the fire marshal, dressed in a blue uniform. “Am I missing something, or are you suddenly digging older guys?”

“Older guys?” Sierra stepped in next to Abby, then she frowned.  “Ew, not that guy.” She gestured to the garden off to the right. “That guy.”

Abby followed Sierra’s direction and her mouth dropped open. Though the firefighter’s attire made the man look bulky, she wondered how much of that was the gear, or if his thickness was due to a muscular body.

Standing near her front window, he chatted to another firefighter, who was slightly shorter than him. The height difference made the taller firefighter look masculine. He’d clearly noticed them ogling, since he caught her gaze.

Under his direct stare, funny things happened low in her belly. Odd, strange happenings, considering seconds ago, a soul-crippling despair had overwhelmed her. The fireman’s features portrayed more than confidence, more than strength, but she thought that came from the sexy, arrogant twinkle in his eye.

The firefighter broke the connection, and Abby exhaled. He turned to the other man and exchanged words. Then hotness packaged in firefighter gear approached. Similar to when she watched her bedroom burn, she froze.

She knew, with total certainty, her reaction was absurd. Her bedroom was destroyed, along with precious pictures, but her body flared with a heat so addictive and intoxicating.

Over Abby’s shoulder, Sierra whistled. “Holy hell—all he needs is the fire burning behind him and we’d have one of those perfect calendar shots.”

“No kidding,” Abby agreed.

On his way down the pathway, Abby scanned over his black boots, to the thick pants she knew had suspenders, and images of a shirtless man filled her mind. She swallowed, forced herself to stop thinking in the gutter, and focused on appropriate places, like his face.

That didn’t help much—he had a chiseled face with masculine features, all making him way too noticeable. Lifting her gaze, she looked past his kissable lips that held a slight arch in the corners, and when his piercing eyes captured hers, she finally released the breath she’d be holding.

Whoa . . .

He was drop-dead gorgeous.

Once the firefighter reached her, he smiled. “You look like you’re feeling better.”

Abby blinked.

Sierra elbowed her in the side. “She’s much better, thank you.”

“Glad to hear it.” His voice wasn’t too deep, but low enough to sound smooth. “Do you have somewhere to stay, Abby?”

Her mind stuttered under how he said her name. As if he wasn’t stating a name, but the one word held powers making her feel like he noticed her, too. A hot shiver slid right down to her toes. “Um . . .”

“She can stay with me,” Sierra interjected with a laugh. “Unless you’re offering—”

Abby jabbed Sierra hard in the side and Sierra cursed.

The firefighter chuckled, focusing on Abby. “Please give the chief the address and telephone number where you’ll be staying so he can get in touch with you. You’ll also want to contact your insurance company right away.”

She parted her lips to respond, yet closed them a second later.

Eyes squinting, lit with a twinkle of mischief, he said, “All right, Abby, you’re good to go.” His eyebrows creased. “Again, I’m sorry about your home.” He hesitated. “And your pictures.”

He turned, walking down her pathway.

Abby stared after him, her mind snapping into focus. On a gasp, she hurried to reach him. Just as he neared her front door, she grasped his bicep, giving his coat a tug. “Wait!”

Glancing over his shoulder, he looked at her hand before his gaze lifted. She nearly melted into a puddle of goo right there on her front porch. “Thank you for holding me like that. I know it’s not in the job description.”

He tipped his hat, giving a soft smile. “Maybe it should be.”

Book Description:

Life has taught Angie DeMarco that all baseball players are womanizers, and her incredible one-night stand with sexy San Francisco Blaze back-up catcher J.T. Sawyer seemed to prove it. Determined not to give in to their sizzling chemistry a second time, she’s kept her distance ever since, focusing on her accounting job with the team. But now she’s laid off…and pregnant.

J.T. was hurt by Angie’s rejection, but with one more year with the Blaze, he has no time for love. He needs to spend the off season training hard so he can negotiate a better contract with a new team at the end of the year. But when Angie shows up on his doorstep, he‘s overwhelmed by wanting to not just do right by her but pursue a relationship with her. Hoping for a second chance, he proposes.

Angie agrees to marry J.T. on one condition: the marriage will be purely a business arrangement. But as Angie spends time with him and his family, and J.T. neglects his training to spend time with her, what begins as a union in name only slowly grows into something more—something that looks a whole lot like love and friendship.

Excerpt:

Just after nine, J.T. left Matt and Kelly at Kamu’s and headed back to his condo. Across the street, Blaze Field was dark, but the Blaze apparel and memorabilia shop outside the stadium was open and doing brisk business. He wasn’t surprised at the turnout, the fans were still reveling in the team’s World Series win—buying up anything that had World Series Champs emblazoned on it.

Although he’d reached the pinnacle of his sport, the victory was bittersweet. His playing time had been minimal and his only significant contribution had been a double in game six—the game that had clinched the Series. That double had scored the go-ahead run and for a few exhilarating hours he’d felt like he’d made a difference. Damn it. He wanted to feel that way all the time. More than anything he wanted to move beyond being a back-up to guys like Rick Taylor and Matt. The problem was, he’d mistakenly assumed his natural talent would be all he needed. Not true. Matt had opened his eyes to that.

After entering the lobby of his building, J.T. rode the elevator up to his floor. Although the condo was nice, he wouldn’t miss it. His house in Sacramento was a lot more spacious and had a big backyard, complete with a pool and hot tub. His older brother, Jake, owned a gym and had agreed to train him during the off season. Jake assured him he would put him through his paces and knowing his brother, there would be torture involved. That tub would come in handy to soak his sore muscles.

The moment he stepped out of the elevator he saw her. A flood of hot, rough sensations slid down his spine as she turned and those mesmerizing eyes of hers locked with his. His breath caught in his throat and he silently cursed himself for still being affected by her. It had been that way since the first moment he’d laid eyes on her and from the telltale thundering of his heart, not much had changed.

Quickly gathering his scattered wits, he strode toward the woman who, for the past couple of months, had been extremely successful at avoiding him—the woman who had shared his bed for one extraordinary night and was gone before sunrise.

Angie DeMarco.

J.T. wasn’t sure why she was standing at his door and didn’t speculate on the reasons as he approached her. Her arms were crossed over her chest, obstructing his view of the ring he still hadn’t seen but knew she’d started wearing a few weeks after their night together. His gut tightened. He shouldn’t care that she was engaged—they barely knew each other. It hit him then that he didn’t know much about her, yet he was intimately acquainted with almost every inch of her slender yet curvy body.

Halting in front of her, he didn’t say a word. Instead he let his gaze wander over her face. Her skin was porcelain smooth, her cheekbones high, and her mouth, with its slight upward tilt at the corners only hinted at the beautiful smile he’d coaxed out of her that night so many weeks ago. Her dark hair spilled around her shoulders in wavy corkscrew spirals that almost begged to be touched. It was soft. It ticked him off that he remembered not only that, but every single thing about the night they’d spent together.

“What are you doing here?” he asked, more harshly than he’d intended. A twinge of guilt hit him but he quickly got over it. They’d had a one night stand—end of story.

Angie loosened her arms from over her chest to push her hair back. Something she did quite frequently. “I—I need to talk to you.” She paused, bit her lower lip and continued, “It’s important. May I come inside? I don’t want to talk about it in the hall.”

“Why not?” He fished for his keys in the pocket of his jeans. “This should be interesting,” he muttered as he unlocked the door and hit the light switch by the door as he moved inside. “Sorry about the mess. I’m packing up to head home.” He waved a hand toward the boxes still strewn around the room. Some of them were packed and taped up, but a few were still waiting to be filled.

“When are you leaving?”

“Sunday morning.” He closed the door to find Angie standing with her back to him, surveying the disaster that was his living room. It was the perfect opportunity to check out her ass, showcased to perfection in the snug black pants she wore. When she turned, he forced his gaze upward to meet hers. She had the most beautiful eyes he’d ever seen—a startling blue that reminded him of the aquamarine gemstones that glittered in the necklace his mother wore on special occasions.

“Sacramento, right?” Angie fidgeted with the strap of her purse on her shoulder, then clasped her hands together in front of her. She seemed nervous. Why?

“Yes.” J.T. set his keys on the table next to the entry. “So why are you here?”

“Now that I’m here, I’m not quite sure how to say it.” She paused and took a deep breath before exhaling. Her face had turned pale and there were dark shadows underneath her eyes. Whatever she had to say seemed to be weighing heavily on her. But what could it be? Was she sorry for avoiding him for weeks? Was she sorry she’d gotten engaged?

Angie let out another breath. “I’m pregnant.”

After one kiss he walks away and she never expects to see him again, but the goddess Inanna has other ideas.

As punishment for breaking his bottle she erases Gage’s memory of everything but Sasha. Only Sasha can give him the life he longs for and only Gage can be the man she’s always dreamed of, but first she’ll have to open her heart and he’ll have to finish the job Inanna gave him. If he fails, he’ll cease to exist.

Excerpt:

Gage let out a breath and sucked in the cool night air as Sasha walked away. He wanted to follow but held his ground, resisting the burning in his blood to hold on to the woman who’d set him free and started the spell with a kiss. How long until it ended?

Around him, the noise of the party continued. Above him, the stars were dull pinpricks. They’d been so bright the first time he’d been summoned from his bottle. At least they were familiar—even though they were in different patterns. Despite the flood of information, he was still reeling from being brought out of the quiet bottle and thrust into a party. Noise and confusion had overwhelmed him. All he’d understood was the goddess-born compulsion to get on the bull and hold on.

He refocused on his surroundings. The machine in the middle of the yard was throwing people off like the wild animal it was supposed to be. This was definitely his strangest appearance. It topped the Venetian masquerade ball, and that had been a very odd affair with too many wishes to fulfill and too many desires to be sated.

By the time the mechanical bull had thrown him off, he’d gotten a handle on where he was and who he was supposed to be doing. Sasha. He was the man she was craving. The need to be with her and fulfilling her unspoken wish thrummed in his blood. He closed his eyes for a moment and let the new desires swirl around him.

This summoning didn’t seem too different from when he’d played a knight for a lonely Lady waiting for husband to return from a Crusade. Honor, respect and doing the right thing. He flexed his fingers. A few hundred years ago, he would’ve enjoyed playing the part.

His problem was he was tired of bit parts, even if they lasted for months. He wanted everything—or nothing. He’d heard rumors of other Inanu who’d broken the spell and been freed from their bottle to become human. He couldn’t be the man Sasha desired, or needed, not if he was going to find his own destiny. Yet his gaze searched her out in the crowd, and his feet wanted to take him to her. His body responded without thought. The need to do what he’d been released for wouldn’t leave him and would only grow worse the longer he stalled. Fighting the will of a goddess was difficult, but not impossible.

He pulled a drink—beer, a thought filled in—out of the ice. Ice. These people must be rich to be bringing that in for a party. New information corrected him as the goddess Inanna filled his head with what he needed to know. Ice was commonplace. Every house had ice.

He glanced around. Prohibition was obviously over, since everyone was drinking freely. He twisted off the cap and took a cautious sip. As the alcohol slid down his throat, he relaxed. Beer was much better cold than it was warm. Over the years, he’d learned to be cautious with food and drink. It was never what he expected or was used to, and he never ate anything unless Inanna explained what it was and filled his head with the facts. He’d learned that the hard way. Goat testicles. Delicacy, Inanna’s arse.

Now Sasha, she was a delicacy. His gaze was drawn to her by the magic that gave him life. Her short blond hair was spiked and she wore a tight pink top and a knee-length black skirt that swirled around her legs when she walked.

Gage’s hand strayed to his necklace. A tiny silver hourglass hung from a chain and rested against his chest. The green sand that timed his stay was barely moving. He had plenty of time. Although he’d made that mistake last time he was released—he’d given in to desire and dallied too long. When he’d fulfilled her needs, he’d been sucked back in to the bottle before he could gain his freedom. Not this time. He wouldn’t let it get that far with Sasha.

Excerpt:

Food or sex? Food or sex? Food or…

Offering me his hand, he bowed and said, “Come, my queen, your feast awaits you.”

Food it is then. Grinning at the unexpected playfulness, I regally presented my hand and allowed him to lead me to my seat. He poured the wine and held up his glass.

“Slainte!”

I touched my glass against his and answered, “Slainte.”

“We have another day in Paris. What would you like to do with it?” he asked while filling my plate for me.

I watched with amusement as he cut up my chicken and tore off a chunk of the warm bread. Who are you and what have you done with Killian? He sat the plate in front of me and picked up a piece of the crispy meat with his fingers. Before I could answer his question, he held the morsel to my lips. I opened my mouth like a baby bird.

Sighing with pleasure, I said, “Mm, that’s so good.”

With a grin, he sliced a piece for himself while I chewed. He slipped another piece between my lips, allowing his fingers to linger longer than necessary. A tingle of electricity wove its way down my spine and I took a calming sip of wine.

What did I want to do with him in Paris, the most romantic city in the world? That had to be a trick question. I mean really. The only thought that came to mind was sex…Of course it was hard to think of anything else with his fingertips brushing my lips and his eyes undressing me. I tried to give him a seductive stare across the table and flinched away at the flash of raw desire in his eyes. He was taking his time right now but those eyes promised no such restraint later. I was having a really hard time eating when I only wanted to drag him to the bed.

“Eat, Princess. You have to get your strength back. Did you know that sex burns off a thousand calories? When you consider your high metabolism, you’ll probably burn triple that much by the end of the night. You’re too weak for that now. Probably we should wait another week or two; just to be safe.”

I stabbed another piece of chicken and made a big show of chewing it up. After swallowing, I said, “You’re not playing fair! I can only eat so much! My stomach’s shrunk.” I speared another bite of chicken and washed it down with mineral water.

He laid his hand over mine and said, “Take your time, baby. We’ve got all night.” He traced the rune on my hand and smiled slowly. “This night’s for you. I’m going to spoil you, so just relax and let me.”

I nibbled on the bread. “You’re a mystery.”

“Why’s that?”

I was idly tracing the strong bones of his hand and enjoying the feel of his blood flowing under the surface. “You’re so powerful, but you’re so gentle with me…I know your strength, but you treat me like I might break. Why are you so good to me? I’m not fragile.”

He shrugged and offered me a tiny, sweet berry. The fruit exploded in my mouth and I couldn’t resist kissing his fingers. These little berries were ridiculously good. About the size of a thumbnail, they burst into a sweet floral juice that was very different from the strawberries in America. I could move to France just for these berries.

“You don’t need to ask me that. You should know the answer. Think with your heart, not your head.”

He tugged me to my feet and wrapped an arm around my waist. Leaning me back over his arm, he nibbled the pulse at the base of my throat. His breath was hot against my skin. He smelled of strawberries and bread and the wild forest scent that surrounded him. My head swam happily and I closed my eyes. Before lifting me upright, his mouth trailed kisses from my throat to the tie of the sarong.

“Are you okay?” he asked softly. “Your eyes are glazed.”

Groaning dramatically, I pressed against him and ran my hands underneath his shirt to feel the warm muscle there. “I’m not going to be responsible for my actions in another 30 seconds. You’re taking chances with my powers. Look! My fingers are glowing!” I wiggled the tips of my fingers. They were glowing whitely in the candlelight of the room. “I might accidently blow you up.”

With a smug glance, he said, “This is your fault. You wanted a full night with me. Are you telling me you can’t handle a full night with me?”
