Zeke’s dealt with a lot in his life, but nothing could prepare him for watching the person he loves fall apart. Patience is different, she’s not the girl he came to love. He’s willing to do whatever it takes to get her back, but a budding music career and his own demons seem to keep getting in the way. How can you help someone else when you can barely help yourself? Once again Zeke is faced with deciding between his future and the future of Patience.

Turning in his arms to face him, I took in his softly sleeping face. His mouth was slightly open and his long dark lashes relaxed against his high cheekbones. Running a finger down the side of his face earned me a deep husky moan. It was the sexiest thing I’d ever heard. His facial hair felt like warm velvet against my cheek as I leaned in and pressed a tiny kiss on the corner of his mouth.

I backed away, expecting to continue to watch him sleep, but he followed me up with his eyes still closed and started to kiss me. Again he moaned when I allowed him access and he slipped his tongue into my mouth. Flipping me onto my back, his naked body covered mine. The white sheet tangled around our bodies as he pressed himself to mine.

His hand worked its way up my side brushing against my breast and I released a tiny sound into his mouth. His hand continued its journey until he rested it against the side of my neck. Tattooed fingers dug into the hairs on the back of my neck as he invaded my mouth with Zeke sweetness.

Pulling away, he gazed down at me with sleepy eyes and a lazy grin.

“You woke us up.” His voice was rough with sleep.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, “Us?”

Looking down between our bodies, he looked back up at me with a smile as he pressed his hips into mine. Hard heat that pushed into my thigh and I lifted my hips for more. He smiled down at me and shifted the hair out of his eyes.

“Yes… us. I’m okay in the morning, but the prick downstairs will take a jab at you if you wake him up.

Ryan lowers his lips to my ear. “Dance with me, Beth.”

“No.” I whisper the reply. I hate him and I hate myself for wanting him to touch me again….

“I dare you…”

If anyone knew the truth about Beth Risk’s home life, they’d send her mother to jail and seventeen-year-old Beth who knows where. So she protects her mom at all costs. Until the day her uncle swoops in and forces Beth to choose between her mom’s freedom and her own happiness. That’s how Beth finds herself living with an aunt who doesn’t want her and going to a school that doesn’t understand her. At all. Except for the one guy who shouldn’t get her, but does….

Ryan Stone is the town golden boy, a popular baseball star jock-with secrets he can’t tell anyone. Not even the friends he shares everything with, including the constant dares to do crazy things. The craziest? Asking out the Skater girl who couldn’t be less interested in him.

But what begins as a dare becomes an intense attraction neither Ryan nor Beth expected. Suddenly, the boy with the flawless image risks his dreams-and his life-for the girl he loves, and the girl who won’t let anyone get too close is daring herself to want it all…

My Thoughts:

WOW, this was a fantastic read. I was up way to late because I couldn’t put it down. It didn’t hurt that Beth lived in the city where I grew up and that I had friends from Ryan’s County.

Ryan is the star ball player for his High School and has the perfect family. At least that’s how it all looks from the outside, but it doesn’t feel so perfect when you’re on the inside. Ryan misses his brother and behind closed doors his parents’ true feelings for each other are let out. It appears they can’t stand each other. His dad acts as if his brother no longer exists and refuses to allow Ryan or his mother to have any contact with him. All Ryan is focused on is making into the Pros and his dad is just as obsessed with it, so much that it’s not clear whose dream it really is at times. Then Ryan is dared to get Beth’s phone number and that’s when his life starts to change. At first he doesn’t see anything past Beth’s hard exterior, but that’s OK ‘because she’s just a dare and he’ll never see her again, right? Wrong, Beth’s uncle brings her to Ryan’s small town to get her away from her mother. Ryan has to deal with his dysfunctional, yet perfect on the outside, family and figure out what he really wants. He also has to fight to be his own person, making his own decisions. Ryan has to overcome the “dare” and the hurt he’s inflicted on Beth to get her to trust him and her love for him.

Beth is from the wrong side of the tracks and has the attitude to go with it. She’s never had it easy, always struggling for food, clothing, and most of all a parents love. Beth’s best friend is a tattooed “tough” guy that looks out for her. They also drink and drug together, until Beth takes the fall for her mom and is “rescued” by her long lost Uncle. Beth doesn’t want to go with Scott, she doesn’t want leave Isaiah or her mom. Beth lives with her aunt, but makes sure her mom eats. There would be no one to look out for her mom when Beth’s gone.  Beth has to struggle to overcome her past and learn to let her mother go (if she can).

This is a touching and dark journey of two young people falling in love and fighting to be with each other on top of finishing their last year of high school. This is listed as young adult, but I would say it’s for mature young adults due to the subject matter; there isn’t any sex in this book.

Scarlet continued clicking down the wide, marble-tiled hallway, passing boutique after boutique of overpriced souvenirs and gifts. Nearing a store boasting high-end purses and accessories, she paused, pretending to look over the offerings. In reality, she took a peek at Mr. Gun Guy in the glass’ reflection.

He didn’t even pretend he wasn’t watching her. No, he stood eight feet back, hands behind him, and flat-out stared at her.

Well, she wasn’t about to have him follow her to dinner. She turned and faced him head on. “Is there a reason you’re following me?”

“Yes.” His voice was a low baritone, but it did nothing for her.

She waited for further explanation but didn’t get anything. “Okay, why?”

The man’s look remained bland. “Because the Ruling Alphas ordered your protection.”

She rolled her eyes. “Well, we’re back to why.”

“It was ordered.”

Scarlet huffed. “Do you know why and you’re not telling me, or are you simply a drone doing as he’s told?”

That earned her a quick twitch of his lips, and she knew he was trying to suppress a smile. “A little in between.”

“Fine. God forbid we complain about the Ruling Alphas and their high handedness. This is because my sisters and I got into it in the ballroom with Garron and Quentin, isn’t it? Keller and Madden tattled to them. It wasn’t our fault, you know.” Then again, the assholes had been tossed from the Gathering, so it made sense that the head honchos needed to be informed. “Well, if you’re gonna follow me around like a puppy,” she winked to take some of the sting out of her insult, “you might as well walk next to me.”

Scarlet gestured for the guard to approach, but the man stood still, his body frozen in indecision.

“Come on, I promise not to tell the big bad Ruling Alphas you actually talked to me while you acted as my guard. Hell, who knows when I’ll actually get to meet them. I’ll probably forget you by then.” She winced. “Not that you’re forgettable, I—” She huffed. “Just talk to me.”

“I don’t think—”

“Well, I do.”

She stomped toward him and tugged on his arm, ignoring the sting that accompanied touching a male not meant for her. Stupid Mark. Now that she’d met her mates, pain would accompany any contact she had with other men, human or wolf. At least until she completed her mating with Keller and Madden. Thankfully she wasn’t alone in the ouchy department. It was the same way for the guys.

“Yes, Alpha Mate.” The man grumbled but relented. Aw, her males had already spread the word about their connection. That had to be the reason she’d been upgraded from simply “Marked” to “Alpha Mate” by the guard. How sweet. Sweet-ish. She sorta wished they hadn’t jumped the gun, but Alphas were Alphas.

As uncomfortable as the wolf appeared, she didn’t bother trying to talk to him further. She simply felt better that he wasn’t following her and making her feel like a stalked chubby gazelle.

In less than a minute, they strode into the restaurant side by side, the maître d’ quickly leading them toward the back. Together, they wove their way through the room, sliding around various tables, and she noticed most were occupied by two men and a single woman.

Well, it looked like quite a few were already performing the Test of Proximity. Although she had a feeling the test was all for show. Much like the dinner she was about to enjoy.

Before long, she stood before her two wolves in the very back of the restaurant, and both men rose upon her approach. It was Madden’s growl that broke the sweet moment.

She needed to remember he was the more aggressive of the two, and apparently he didn’t like other men close to her.

Hoping her mother’s teachings had been correct, she stepped in front of the guard, redirecting the wolf’s attention. “Madden?”

The rolling sound cut off the moment his eyes met hers, the last of his air hissing from his lungs in a sigh. “Scarlet.”

She waved behind her. “The Ruling Alphas said I needed a guard. No need to get testy.”

Madden furrowed his brow. “Wha—”

Keller cut him off. “I’m sure they want to keep you safe.” He smiled and stepped around the table, drawing her forward with a hand on her lower back. The seductive scents of heated wood, raw power and man surrounded her, and she melted into his side. “You already know how to handle our Madden.”

She chanced a look at the wolf in question and noted his smile. “Perhaps.” She turned her attention back to Keller. “I’m not sure how to handle you, though.”

“I doubt that’ll be a problem, sweet. I’m like any other wolf. Give me something to snack on and you’ll have my attention.” She didn’t miss Keller’s not-so-subtle innuendo.

“Right,” she drawled.

Keller pulled out the chair and she sat between the two men. His heat warred with the inferno that flowed from Madden. Two sides of the same coin, so alike, yet so different.

The guard that had accompanied her took up a post in front of the table. He and four others essentially made a wall-o-wolves, cutting them off from the rest of the diners. Talk about overkill.

My Thoughts:
I really liked this book. It was fast paced and well written. My only problem with it was the length. I knew going in it wasn’t a full novel, but I wasn’t ready for it to end when it did. I just got to know Scarlet had a strong core that she used to hide her vulnerabilities. That she loved and was very loyal to her sisters.

The Alpha pair that turn out to be her mates, Keller and Madden, came across as very alpha and hot. There were hints of their tender, caring sides toward Scarlet but the story ended before that could be completely explored. The “claiming” (read sex) scene was oh so very hot and made me really wish to be Scarlet for a night.

In short my only problem was the length and my desire for it to be longer. I always seem to feel that way about Celia Kyle’s work.

Not all pleasures are a sin…

Mina wants to put her seduction by a golden-eyed devil behind her, but the birth of her son, Jacques, renders that impossible. She tries to forget the only man who ever roused her passion, but when she notices her son exhibiting strange behavior—and less-than-human characteristics—she must face her past and learn to trust, and love, again.

Howling drunk, the one thing Remy clearly remembers is seducing Mina. A pity he didn’t think to get her address, especially since he marks her as his mate. When she disappears, he’s got plenty of time to regret, but he doesn’t get a chance to atone until she comes back into his life with an unexpected surprise.

Thrust into the role of father, Remy works to bond with his son while gaining forgiveness. But will he get the chance to truly make Mina his mate before danger threatens their fragile happiness?

My Thoughts:

Mina is raised by religious fanatics. I don’t mean extremely religious or devout. Her family looks down their noses at anyone who isn’t “religious”, white, and perfect. With this mind, Mina’s cousin’s take her to a frat party. They really don’t like Mina and leave her on her own to survive. Lucky for her Remy saves the day. After the seduction by Remy, Mina sneaks out and goes home never to see him again, or so she thinks. She’s convinced she’s slept with the Devil, due to the glowing eyes and feelings he stirred in her. Apparently so does her family who unceremoniously throw her out of their house and lives the same day she finds out she’s pregnant.

Remy is a hot alpha male with all the trimmings including the over confidence and arrogance. He completely screws it up when he sleeps with and marks Mina through a haze of alcohol, which he drinks WAY too much of trying get his courage up to face his mate. He looks for her and of course can’t find her; having her name would’ve helped in the search.

Fast forward 5 years and circumstances bring Mina and Remy back together. Witnessing Mina struggle with her family’s indoctrination and what she now understands to be wrong changed my opinion of her. In the first few chapters of the book Mina got on my last nerve and was TSTL. After living the next five years raising her son on her own then reuniting with Remy we see her strength and growth. Remy has to acknowledge all he did wrong and help Mina deal with her past, present and future.  He is also thrown into the role of father and he’s great at it. They face the threat to their son together and the challenges of being in an interracial relationship admirably. I like the fact that some of the true issues of such a relationship were confronted in this book.

ARC Review: Breaking Her Rules (Red Stone Security #6)

Breaking Her Rules

Breaking Her Rules (Red Stone Security #6) by Katie Reus
Length:  46,000 words
Review Source: Author
Release Date: April 7, 2013
My Rating: 4 ★★★★☆

Iris Tarango is a small-town girl from the wrong side of the tracks; she’s also a decorated former Marine who fought hard to become one of Red Stone Security’s most respected agents. But her perfectly ordered life is turned upside down when she’s assigned to guard the sexy, dominating tycoon she shares a secret history with. The instant Iris walks back into the billionaire’s diamond-studded orbit, the wild attraction flares between them…and her reputation, objectivity, and heart are in trouble.

After an attempt on his life, business magnate Wyatt Christiansen calls in major favors to hire Iris as his bodyguard. He knows she’s the best, though he has another motive too. He sees this as his final chance to win her heart. But when danger spins out of control, all Wyatt can think of is getting Iris out of harm’s way—even if it means losing her love in the end.

Unfortunately, the killer seems to know their every move. If Wyatt and Iris don’t figure out who put out the hit, they’ll lose more than their chance at happiness together.

My Thoughts:

I loved the fact that Iris is the head of her security team. She is a strong, competent, and talented heroine. Yet, Iris is emotionally vulnerable, not letting herself love anyone or anything due to the risk of losing it. Iris is independent and one of the best at what she does.  A serious bad ass woman I’d love to be when I grow up ;). She loves Wyatt and has for a long time, but fights it with everything she has. After a week in Vegas with him she runs back to her comfort zone, Miami and her job. Iris has to face Wyatt a month later when he shows up in Miami.

Wyatt has a dominate personality. I loved Wyatt. He’s known Iris since childhood, been attracted to her since he was 15, and admitted his love for her, to himself, for a year. He was raised in the same basic circumstances as Iris and is hesitant to admit his love to her due to his fear of rejection. Wyatt is the possessive and jealous type that I like. He doesn’t go overboard, but I love it when alpha males lose their control a bit due to jealousy over “their woman”. Wyatt has spent his entire adult life striving to succeed and make money.  That is until he acknowledges his love of Iris and she takes the top spot in his life.

I was pretty much hooked by the first page and stayed up way too late to finish it. There was enough action to keep me turning the pages and I was surprised to find out who was actually behind everything. The sex between Wyatt and Iris was well written, diverse and hot.  This is the 6th book in the series but can be read as a stand-alone.

I recommend this book for fans of Romantic Suspense. Anyone who likes a strong, kick ass heroine.  Hot alpha males and intense  action with a bit of mystery.

Hidden Alpha by Kasey Dean

My Rating: 4/5

Devlin Mikhail and Chase Tanner have been searching for eleven years for their other mate. When disaster strikes the same day Chase finds their human mate, he knows they found her at the perfect time to complete their family.

Amalya McKinnon is a human who had her heart broken five years ago when the love of her life, Gavin, left without contacting her again. When she meets Chase and Devlin, she is thrown into a world she never knew existed. She is drawn to the two wolf shifters but has a hard time trusting them.

Devlin and Chase earn her trust and start to heal her heart, but her happiness doesn’t last. Gavin returns to claim her as his mate, and a threat from the past she never knew existed has come back for her.

Can the three men put their differences aside and make her happy, or will they all lose her?

Wow! Glad I decided to try a new author.

Devlin and Chase are the Alpha and Beta to their pack.  They are also mates looking for their 3rd.
Devlin is a strong and confident alpha, yet he can be very compassionate and loving. He isn’t afraid to show Chase his love and affection.  He can jump to conclusions pretty fast and they aren’t always the right ones.

Chase is the Beta and main enforcer for the pack. He shares many of Devlin’s characteristics, except Chase is calmer and less quick to judge a situation without thinking it through.  He was so happy to find their 3rd mate.  Love at first scent, so to speak.

Amalya is a women still struggling five years after the love of her life just up and left without explanation.  She is finishing up her first year as a teacher when Chase walks in and grabs her attention and libido for the first time since Gavin left her.  Amalya is a woman doing her best to survive after being left. She is confident in her career, just not so much in her self-worth.  When Chase and Devlin tell her she is their mate she’s scared, but doesn’t deny her feelings for them.  Moving in with them was her only hope for love and future, no matter that it terrified her.

The sex was loving and hot, whether it was between the guys, or the guy(s) and Amalya.   I did get a little tired of reading “my mate” so much, but it was done in context. The editing could have been better. It was cases of they when it should have been the.   I’d give it a 4.5 if it weren’t for the editing.  I’d also give fewer stars if the editing was something that was really bothersome or overwhelming.
