Jane, a shapeshifting vampire-hunter-for-hire, crosses paths with a stranger who has arrived in New Orleans, enlisted to hunt vampires who have gone insane-or so he says…

Pat’s Review:

Faith Hunter continues the experience of Jane Yellowrock with more dynamic scenes of Jane seeing more visions/reality of her soul home. Friends she trusts turn out to have hidden agendas. More great action with blow by blow tension building precision. The moment you finish the book, it’s like coming up for air to get that breath you’ve been holding. We get to see more of Jane herself, including her deep belief in Christianity and doing the morally right thing (not always easy for a rogue vamp killer). Always the awesome details of Jane getting dressed in her leathers, getting weaponed up, and jumping on Bitsa to head to the next crisis. Fantastic read.

The vampire council has hired skinwalker Jane Yellowrock to hunt and kill one of their own who has broken sacred ancient rules — but Jane quickly realizes that in a community that is thousands of years old, loyalties run deep…

With the help of her witch best friend and local vigilantes, Jane finds herself caught between bitter rivalries — and closer than ever to the secret origin of the entire vampire race. But in a city of old grudges and dark magic, Jane will have to fight to protect both sides, even if no one will protect her.

Pat’s Review:

Jane Yellowrock, shape shifter, competent with shotguns that are hand-packed with silver fléchette rounds, silver coated knives (vamp killers), stakes that she hides in her braided hair, some poison-tipped, some not, brings justice to the supernaturals that don’t follow the rules. Lots of action. Solid characters. Takes place in New Orleans with great descriptions of the smells, sights, and noises of the wet, humid land.

Jane Yellowrock is the last of her kind-a skinwalker of Cherokee descent who can turn into any creature she desires and hunts vampires for a living. But now she’s been hired by Katherine Fontaneau, one of the oldest vampires in New Orleans and the madam of Katie’s Ladies, to hunt a powerful rogue vampire who’s killing other vamps…

Mud’s Thoughts:

I am a sucker for science-based urban fantasy. When the story is firmly grounded in physics but takes it one step further to develop a complex world I am hooked.

Faith has managed to explain the great mystery as to where mass goes during a shape shift and other mysteries. She brings the typical cast of supernatural characters to her story, but they are dark creatures, no sparkling vampires.

Jane Yellowrock is maybe the last of her kind, a shapeshifting Cherokee skinwalker who uses her abilities to bounty hunt vampires.

I was pulled into the story and enjoyed the character development and attention to detail.

Blurb:
Jacob La Costa Rios is the head of the California governor’s security team; he’s also a vampire who wants the governor, a presidential hopeful, to support the peaceful integration of vampires into human society. Unfortunately, there are others who oppose Jake’s plan. Plus, Jake’s a little distracted by discovering his one true mate, the human female who can give him everything he’s always wanted: love, children, and continuing immortality. Francesca Marie Stewart is the governor’s “go-green” political consultant.

Although she’s been attracted to Jake from day one, her priority is her career and protecting her heart. But then Jake blatantly propositions her and Frankie, who hasn’t experienced sexual intimacy since she was seventeen-years-old, decides it’s time to take what she wants—within reason. No matter—once Jake makes love to Frankie, he knows reason will be the farthest thing from her mind. Then he just has to eliminate the person threatening her, reveal the fact he’s a vampire, and convince her that trusting him will bring both of them eternal happiness.

A Vampire’s Salvation is an erotic romance intended for mature audiences.

Includes a special message from the editor, as well as excerpts from these Loveswept titles:
Along Came Trouble, Hero of My Heart, and Arrested by Love.

My Thoughts:

This story is short and filled with romance and action. If you like PNR, erotica, and are looking for a good fast read this is for you.

Frankie is a complex person. She’s confident in her work life, yet insecure and innocent when it comes to sex and relationships. Frankie has good reason not to trust men. It all stems from an incident in her past which has left her scarred both physically and emotionally.

Jake is a vampire that is almost out of time when he finds his life mate in Frankie. He knows he’ll have a time of it getting her to trust him. It was sweet the way he took his time, was loving and gentle with her. Of course, he protects and saves Frankie. He waits a little too long for me before he makes her aware that she’s his life mate. It would have saved her a lot of her hurt and confusion.

The story is fast paced and will keep you engaged.  There was plenty of sex for a story of this size and it was pretty steamy. My only issue was with one scene, if I’d read “slowly and tenderly” one more time I might have stopped reading. It’s obvious from the ending that the story will continue, but not who it will be about. It could be about different people, but I felt it left Jake and Frankie’s story with a “to be continued” feel.  This is a good short read with just a bit more information and length it could have been a really good/great story.

Review of DarkStorm (Heart of a Vampire #3)

Darkstorm (Heart of a Vampire, #3) by Amber Kallyn
Publisher: Dragon Heart Books

Review Source: Author
Release Date: October 18, 2012
My Rating: 4.5/5

After millennia apart, can two vampires rekindle their love, or will the line between right and wrong keep them apart?

Hunted by the demon who imprisoned her for hundreds of years, Ashlyn MacDougal is fleeing with a secret which could destroy her soul. When she runs into her lost love, Connor Gregory, life twists upside down.

Connor has spent the last thousand years as a Judge for the Magic Council, tracking and destroying demons. Especially the abominations–those part demon, part vampire. When he discovers his long ago lover is not only alive, but protecting a half-breed, his confusion knows no bounds.

Thrown together by circumstance, they must resolve their past. With demons after them, Ashlyn and Connor come to find their love still burns. Yet, the secrets she hides, and his duty to his job, might just keep them apart for another eternity.

This is the third book in the Heart of a Vampire series and they just keep getting better.

I was really hooked when I found out why Ashlyn was protecting the half-breed.  Ashlyn has to be one of the strongest heroines I’ve read in a long time. To go through what she did for centuries and come out the other side stronger and not a quivering pile of messed up goo is amazing. On top of that she spends the next 500 years growing stronger and protecting Sean. When she comes across her lost love she is, of course, conflicted. The journey Ashlyn travels to face her past and accept that she is worthy of Conner’s love was a trying one. It was well done and realistic. I could feel her shame and desire for love.

Conner, the Judge, thought his betrothed was killed when he was turned. Seeing her from a distance for the first time in a thousand years was a bit of shock. Then to realize that was with and protecting one of his sworn enemies really infuriates him. When he catches up to Ashlyn and discovers the truth of the situation he is thrown of balance again. After he comes to terms with the situation he realizes he has to convince Ashlyn that they have a future. The things he says to help her understand that he not only loves her but that she is worthy of that love was sweet, heartfelt and a little blunt.  Conner had his own struggle to accept the things he found out about his lost love and his failure to protect her. He faced this head on and acted on his decisions. There was no back and forth with him, which I really liked and admired.

I would have given 5 stars but for one thing. There were times when Sean was referred to as Seth (who isn’t a character in the book); I get thrown out of a story when I suddenly have no idea who it is talking about.

Darkstorm can be read as a stand-alone, but would be a more enjoyable read after the first books in the series.

Darkstorm is available on Amazon.
